Discovering
your Authentic Self

A Residential Retreat
with Ian Watson

About the Retreat
In our formative years, we are required to modify our behaviour and adapt our personalities to gain the love and approval we need as youngsters. As we grow older, we take on additional roles and responsibilities, and in the process our sense of 'self' - who we are in essence - starts to be eroded away.

The birth of the spiritual life is the moment when your inner being wakes up and demands your attention. The wake-up call can happen at any age and can take many forms - an inner restlessness or dissatisfaction, a relationship break-up, an illness or accident, loss of a job, or simply the growing feeling that
there must be more to life than this.

The process of re-discovering who you really are and what is your life's true purpose then begins to unfold. If you resist this process, the chances are you will suffer, because it has its own momentum and you will find that your usual coping mechanisms and strategies for maintaining your old identity start to lose their effectiveness. The challenge is to say 'yes' to the adventure, to accept that your wise inner-self knows better than you do, and to follow your heart's desire.

This retreat will help you to let go of the old, limited version of yourself that you are in the process of outgrowing and to rediscover your authentic self, giving birth to an inner strength, self-acceptance and freedom that was previously unavailable. You will find that as you transform your relationship to your self, your relationships with others are also transformed. As you release the old conditioning, limiting beliefs and emotions that have held you back, you free yourself to live your own life spontaneously and creatively.

The Retreat Location
The retreat will be held at the Rocksea Resort close to Nuweiba on the Red Sea coast. The backdrop of the Sinai desert creates the perfect environment for self-reflection and inner transformation, while the turquoise waters of the Red Sea have been associated with spiritual regeneration for thousands of years.

Rocksea is a small, family-run resort with clean, comfortable accommodation, friendly staff and freshly-prepared food. The accommodation comprises twin-bedded wooden bungalows overlooking the sea, with nearby showers and WC.

We will be using the purpose-built dome for workshop sessions, and there will be plenty of time for swimming, snorkeling and relaxation. The climate at Rocksea is virtually guaranteed to be warm (but not too hot) and sunny at this time of year (ranging from around 20 to 30 degrees centigrade).

Retreat Schedule
Arrival will be in the afternoon & evening of Sunday 15th March. The retreat itself will commence in the morning of Monday 16th. Each day will consist of a morning and early evening workshop session, with the afternoons free to enjoy the best of the sunshine and sea. One day during the week will be a breakout day, with an opportunity to take a camel trip into the desert, pay a visit to St Catherine's monastery and Mount Sinai, or to simply relax. Departure will be on the morning of Saturday 21st March, unless you decide to extend your stay and have arranged extra accommodation with Rocksea.

Retreat Fee & Booking
The earlybird fee is £375 if booked and paid before 31st January 2009. After this date, the fee will be £425. The fee includes six nights accommodation in a shared twin bungalow, all meals, water and soft drinks. There is a single-occupancy supplement of £35 if you prefer not to share.

The retreat fee does not include flights or transfers to and from the airport.
To book a place on this retreat, go to www.ianwatsonseminars.com
Flights from overseas should be booked to and from Sharm-el-Sheikh or Taba airports. You should aim to arrive on or before Sunday 15th March, and depart on or after Saturday 21st March. If you want to extend your stay at Rocksea either before of after the retreat, email Rocksea to check accommodation availability. If you wish to spend some extra time visiting other sites in Egypt, you may prefer to fly to and from Cairo instead.

Airport Transfers
These can be arranged directly with the staff at Rocksea, once you have booked your flights.

Cairo: the travel time from Cairo is about 5 hours by car or 6-7 hours by bus, or you can catch an internal flight to Sharm which takes about an hour.

Basic technique and correct playing styles are introduced and participants are encouraged to begin improvising and working together as a drum orchestra. Suitable for all levels of drumming experience.

Chas Whitaker- Darabuka / Douf / Riq / Zills.

Chas has been teaching and performing Middle Eastern Percussion for over 15 years . Chas has travelled extensively through the Middle East and North Africa and has studied in several countries. He plays in several bands and accompanies many Oriental dancers, specializing in drum solos. For more information on Chas and Arabic percussion in general visit - www.arabicdrum.co.uk

Middle Eastern Music Workshop – Maren Lueg

The course would provide a unique opportunity for musicians to explore the relationship between Middle Eastern and Western music.

Participants will bring their own melody instrument, which they already have a basic proficiency on and are able to learn simple melodies either by ear or from sheet music (provided). Arabic scales are introduced which do not use quarter notes but sound very “eastern” and melodies based on these scales will be learned. Improvisation is a very important element in Arabic music and participants are encouraged to explore their improvisational abilities in a supportive structure. Arabic music forms and scales with quarter tones are introduced and demonstrated for participants to help in their appreciation of Arabic music.

Maren Lueg - Arabic  Nay  Flute, Mizmar and Saxophone and Silver Flute.

Maren has been teaching and performing Middle Eastern and Balkan music for over 10 years playing Western and Middle Eastern wind instruments.  She performs regularly with British and Arab musicians around the UK and has studied such traditional Middle Eastern wind instruments as the Nay (bamboo flute) and Zurna (double reed pipe) in Turkey and Egypt. Maren is currently working on her Masters in Arabic Ney and Middle Eastern Music at the School of Oriental and African Studies (London University). Middle Eastern Dance to live music – Carmen Jones

These workshops will help the dancer to gain greater understanding of Middle Eastern rhythms and melodies and how to interpret them. There will be focus on technique, step combinations and in developing personal expression in the dance.

Carmen Jones , Middle Eastern dance.

Carmen began her love affair with Arabic dance in the early 1990's. In that time she has acquired knowledge from many great teachers from far and wide. She herself teaches regularly nationwide and especially has a true passion and understanding of live music through the experience of  accompanying some of the best bands in the UK, Hossam Ramzy’s Egyptian orchestra being one of the most recent. Carmen works closely with Chas and Maren in several musical projects.
